Some Frequently Asked Questions on Sun-Protection and Sunscreens
1. What are Sunscreens?
Sunscreens are defined as physical or chemical substances which protect our skin from harmful UV rays by absorbing or reflecting them.
2. What is meant by SPF?
This only applies to the UVB screening action of the sunscreen. For example when using a prodcut with a SPF 15, one can spend 15 times longer in the sun before becoming sunburnt The SPF does not apply to UVA sunscreens so even a procut with a SPF 25 but with no UVA screen will be less effective than a product with both SPF but with a UVA screen. Therefore, a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB block is a better skin protector than a product with a SPF 25 which does not have a UVA screen. Effectiveness of a sunscreen is based on its Sun Protection Factor ie SPF.
3. How long before sun exposure should a sunscreen be applied?
Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow sufficient time for a protective film to develop. If the face is washed or excessive sweating washes off the agent, it should be reapplied.
4. What is meant by Water-Resistant and Waterproof Sunscreen?
Ideally 'water-resistant' sunscreen formulation maintains the SPF level after 40 minutes of water immersion. But even such sunscreen should be re-applied after prolonged swimming or vigorous activity.
Water-resistant: 40 minutes
Water-proof: 80 minutes
5. What is the approximate quantity top be applied of this SPF for adequate protection?
Ideal application thickness of sunscreen is 2 mg/sq cm of the skin.
6. What is meant when we say a broad-spectrum sunscreen?
Elovera-SPF provides both UVA and UVB protection through the entire range of UVA I and UVA II range. Hence called a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
In addition Aloe vera and vitamin E in Elovera-SPF have sun protective properties.
